Residents of the Settlement Buoyo, Pottawattamie County, Iowa

Residents

There is an overlap of the settlements of North Pigeon, Shirts’ Camp, Tennessee Hollow, and Buoyo. It appears that Luke Johnson was in the area of these settlements on November 19, 1850. Branches of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were established in these areas. Shirts Branch changed names many different times throughout its existence. It was called “Shirts Branch” for two years from June of 1848 to June of 1850. In June of 1850, it was renamed “Buoyo Branch” after Shirts and other original members left for the Valley. On July 9, 1851, the Rocky Ford and Buoyo Branches were merged. On August 17, 1851, the Branch was renamed “Union Branch on Buoyo.” Eventually, it was absorbed into the North Pigeon Branch (1).
