The settlement of Big Spring was established probably in 1846 but it was not mentioned in print until January 1848. However, by 1850 most of the original settlers had moved. The enumeration of Big Spring was started on October 21st with Dwelling #824. It most likely ended on the same day and Dwelling #831. There may be some overlap with Davis Camp. The Big Spring Branch Tithing Records mention that Feby Ann Willcom (Phoebe Ann Wilcox) paid one calf toward the cost of the coffin for her mother. Margaret was buried December 3, 1848.
High Priests from the Big Spring Branch
There were two Big Spring Branches of the Church (2). It seems that the list of High Priests did not designate as to which Big Spring Branch they represented. The Big Spring or Spring Branch on Mosquito Branch may have been a precursor to the Carterville Branch or merged with the Carterville Branch. On May 8, 1847, the President of the Big Spring Branch on Mosquito was E. M. Greene with Moses Tracy, David Colvin, Orlin Colvin, William F. Carter, Elisabeth Heward, and Levi Savage as members (3). Those associated with the Big Spring Branch on Mosquito Branch are printed in red. The other names are printed in bold print. Name corrections are in parentheses along with other information. In 1848, six men from Big Spring signed the Tabernacle Post Office Petition: Chauncey W. Carter, Hiram G. Clayton, Royal Durphy, German Ellsworth, Moses T. Shepherd, and Eden Smith (4).The only one not previously listed was Hiram G. Claton.

James died in 1847 and Lydia married John Clayton, James’ brother. Lydia and John had a daughter born in 1849 whom they named Lydia. Lydia brought her family west in the David Wood Company in 1852. John did not come west.
