A letter dated July 4, 1848, written by Rachel Sirrine indicates she was a member of the Honey Creek settlement.  The letter was addressed as follows:  Dear Mother & Dear Hannah.  Her mother-in-law’s name was Sarah Hannah Garrison Sirrine.  Rachel did have a sister-in-law by the name of Hannah.  Maybe it was addressed to her as well.  She pens, “Your dearly beloved son and my best friend has gone the way of all the earth.  He was a dear faithful friend on earth, in death—dearer to me than my own soul. . . . This news will doubtless overwhelm you with sorrow, may God support you under it is the prayer of your afflicted daughter.  O Mother, O Mother here I am at the Bluffs with my 3 children and with no husband, no little Maria, no Father, Mother, Brother, or Sister, nothing but the departed joys and almost entirely among strangers and knowing that I shall never see them again.  If I do the will of my dear husband which I shall do if it takes my life, and that is to go to the valley of the Salt Lake and take good care of the children.” (3)
