Residents of Bullock’s Grove Settlement, Pottawattamie County

From the Pottawattamie High Council Minutes of 1846-1853, the following residents were added to the resident list (1).  They were residents of Bullock’s Grove but attended the Hyde Park Branch.

The 1850 U. S. Census of Pottawattamie County was enumerated by Luke Johnson.  At that time, Johnson was a resident of Hyde Park settlement.  The enumeration began on August 30, 1850.  It appears that Johnson began his work with Bullock’s Grove on the ridge above his residence.  Following are the names listed:

Marriages

From the Pottawattamie County Marriage Records, it lists:

Youngs I. Kendall of Bullock’s Grove aged 30 years and Pamelia Holman of Ceg [Keg] Creek settlement aged 22 years both in said County, she being a resident thereof (2).”  The date was May 10, 1849. 

No one named Youngs I. Kendall has been found.  There is a Pamelia Holman that married Vinedge Garrigus in about 1847.  This couple traveled west with an unknown company but are found in the 1850 U. S. Census at Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory.

B. K. Bullock and Miss Martha Hart, both of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, [no date], at Bullock’s Grove, by Isaac Bullock (3).”  From the Pottawattamie County Marriage Records, the date was January 26, 1851.

Benjamin Kimball Bullock became the Bishop of the Hyde Park Branch.  Martha was the daughter of Thomas Passmore and Mary Ruth Riggs Hart.  Her father died the year of her birth and her mother in 1846.  She was raised by John and Jane Kelton Bullock Riggs.

On March 7, 1851, The Frontier Guardian newspaper listed the marriage of “James W. Preston and Miss Emeline Houston, both of Pottawattamie County, Iowa at Bullock’s Grove, by Orson Hyde.”  From the Pottawattamie County Marriage Records, the date was March 2, 1851.

James Whitmore Preston was the son of Richard and Mary Nance Preston.  Emeline Houston was the daughter of Isaac and Theodocia Keyes Houston. 

Deaths

 “Gardner, Amos, son of Moses I. and Polly Gardner, [died] 23 May 1850, at Bullock’s Grove, of smallpox, 13 years, 2 months, and 19 days.” It was written in The Frontier Guardian newspaper on May 29, 1850. 

Amos was the son of Moses Isaac and Polly Ann Pierson. 

Travel Companies

The William Snow/Joseph Young Company departed Kanesville on June 21, 1850, with about 42 wagons.  Among those traveling with this Company was Ezra Bickford and his wife Abigail Hartford.

Ezra died near Grand Island, Nebraska on the way to the Salt Lake Valley.
 
Isaac Bullock was the Captain of a Company that departed in the Spring of 1852.  Among the 155 travelers were the following Bullock’s Grove residents:
