Where was the family in the 1850 U. S. Census? F. D. Richards was serving as mission President in England at the time. Jane Richards age 28 and Franklin Richards age 1 found in Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory, family 344.

Which Pioneer wagon train took the family west? The Willard Richards Company consisted of 568 persons. The Company departed on 3 July 1848 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on 10 October 1848.

Franklin D. Richards initially traveled to the Valley with his wife in 1848, when he served as a captain of a hundred. This initial trip is confirmed by his wife's obituary. He crossed the plains at least two more times as missionary returning from Europe, once in 1856 and again in 1868.

- On March 22, 1861 another daughter born to Franklin D. Richards was named Wealthy. Both were named after his mother Wealthy Dewey.
